Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Dr. Pascal Dozie, describing him as a visionary leader, a true gentleman, and an exemplary mentor.
Dozie, the founder of the defunct Diamond Bank and the pioneer Chairman of MTN Nigeria, passed away at the age of 85. Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential business figures, his legacy spans across banking, telecommunications, and mentorship.
In a condolence message shared on Tuesday, Obi recalled his personal encounters with Dozie, particularly during the early days of Diamond Bank and MTN Nigeria. He praised Dozie’s integrity, leadership, and lifelong commitment to building institutions that serve the public good.
“I am deeply saddened this morning by the news of the passing of Dr. Pascal Dozie, a man I held in high regard,” Obi stated. “I met him during the formation of Diamond Bank and later in the early stages of MTN Nigeria. Throughout our interactions, I came to know him as not just a brilliant businessman, but a teacher and a true gentleman who consistently worked for the good of all.”
Obi further described Dozie’s life as an inspiration to generations of entrepreneurs and professionals, noting that his accomplishments reflect an unwavering dedication to excellence and service.
“His legacy as a banker and entrepreneur speaks volumes about his vision, leadership, and the positive impact he had on countless individuals and businesses,” Obi said. “His life’s work continues to inspire many in both the financial and corporate sectors.”
Offering his condolences to Dozie’s family, Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and the strength for those mourning to endure the great loss.
“May God Almighty, who has called him home, grant him eternal rest in His kingdom and give his family, and all of us who mourn, the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he concluded.
