Renowned journalist and one-time National Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Jola Ogunlusi, has passed away at the age of 91.
The distinguished media practitioner reportedly died on the morning of Saturday, April 19, 2025, following a brief illness. His demise was confirmed in a statement issued by family representative and journalist, Gbenga Aruleba.
“With deep sorrow but immense gratitude to God for a life richly lived, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, father, grandfather, and uncle, Mr. Jola Ogunlusi. He departed this world peacefully at 9:54 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025, after a short illness. He was 91 years old,” the statement read.
Fondly referred to as “Papa Jola” by friends, family, and colleagues, Ogunlusi carved a remarkable niche for himself in the Nigerian media landscape. He began his journalism journey in the early 1970s, steadily rising through the ranks with unwavering professionalism and integrity. His appointment as National Secretary of the NUJ marked a significant chapter in his career, where he became known for championing press freedom and advocating for the welfare of journalists across the country.
His family’s tribute described him as a man who devoted his entire life to the service of humanity, journalism, and God. “Papa Jola indeed lived a meaningful and impactful life. From his early days in the newsroom to his leadership position in the NUJ, he stood out as a symbol of dedication, fairness, and an unshakable commitment to truth and justice,” the statement said.

“He left lasting impressions wherever he went. Daddy was a beacon of sincerity and compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand. His love for family, his sense of duty to friends, and his care for those in need were qualities that made him truly exceptional,” the family added.
