The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday in celebration of International Workers’ Day. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Tuesday evening.
According to the statement, which was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the government recognized and appreciated the immense contributions of Nigerian workers to national development. Tunji-Ojo applauded the workforce for their unwavering dedication, resilience, and sacrifices, which he said are instrumental in positioning Nigeria as a respected member of the global community.
Workers as Pillars of National Development
The minister emphasized that Nigerian workers have played a pivotal role in the country’s progress, highlighting their impact on economic growth and industrialization. He urged citizens, particularly those in the workforce, to adopt a culture of innovation, productivity, and excellence in their various professions.
“There is dignity in labour,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “The commitment and dedication we bring to our jobs are essential to building a strong, prosperous nation. We must continue to elevate standards in our respective fields to enhance governance and ensure that all Nigerians benefit from the country’s vast resources.”

Reiterating the goals of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the minister encouraged Nigerians to remain optimistic about the future.
