In line with the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign programme, the 2023 presidential candidate of the PDP and former Nigerian Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Saturday, 22nd of October, 2022, arrived in Edo State for the party’s presidential campaign, in the company of the party’s national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and other party chieftains.

This development was made known by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar through his official Twitter handle on Saturday morning, with a post captioned “The great Edo State, we are here”.

The PDP has been battling an internal crisis since Alhaji Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential flagbearer in May, 2022, as a group of the party led by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has demanded for Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation, explaining that the party’s constitution does not allow the party’s presidential flagbearer and national chairman to come from the same region of the country.
Governor Nyesom Wike and his political associates, including Governors Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, withdrew from the party’s Presidential Campaign Council and vowed not to take part in Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, unless Senator Iyorchia Ayu gives way for a Southerner to become the party’s national chairman.
