Tottenham Hotspur and Antonio Conte have mutually agreed to part ways, with Cristian Stellini taking over as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach.
The announcement came late on Sunday night following Conte’s explosive press conference after Tottenham’s 3-3 draw with Southampton, where he criticized his players and questioned ownership’s role in the club’s trophy record.
“We can announce that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.
“Cristian Stellini will take the team as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach.”
Tottenham thanked Conte for his contribution, highlighting their Champions League qualification in his first season.
Despite a fourth-placed finish in his debut season, Tottenham failed to make progress this year, exiting both the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
With 10 Premier League games remaining, chairman Daniel Levy emphasized the need for everyone to work together to secure a Champions League place for the club and its supporters.
“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.”
In November 2021, Antonio Conte was appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo.
Despite facing odds, Conte led Spurs to a fourth-placed finish in his debut season, surpassing Arsenal in a dramatic final stretch of the 2021/22 campaign.
However, Tottenham has failed to progress this season and is ironically in a similar position to last year, having been eliminated from the FA Cup by lower league opposition and exiting the UEFA Champions League in the last 16 stage with a lacklustre performance against AC Milan.
Conte’s frustration came to a head following a recent loss to Southampton, which turned out to be his final match as Tottenham’s head coach.
