Aformer federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has berated the leadership of the World Bank for asking President Bola Tinubu’s government to increase taxes and fuel prices and withdraw subsidies on everything in the country.
This is despite raising the poverty alert that at least 104 million Nigerians are currently living below the poverty line.
The World Bank also said in its report that at least 104 million Nigerians were living below the poverty line.
However, amid the rising poverty in Nigeria orchestrated by inflation and high cost of living including the high cost of fuel price, food prices, foreign exchange rate, and other factors, the World Bank asked the Nigerian government to increase taxes and fuel prices which are already high and withdraw subsidies on everything in the country.
Reacting to the World Bank’s report and its recommendations for the Nigerian government, Sani said that the World Bank’s kingpins comfortably sit in their office and think of the economy as a game of Chess and not about people, their families and their lives.
According to him, the Nigerian government is currently managing a grenade with care and the World Bank is telling the government to remove the pin.
He questioned where the World Bank would be if the country was plunged into further chaos.
Senator Sani said, “The World Bank is insouciantly telling Our Nigerian Government to raise taxes, withdraw subsidies on everything and just increase the price of PMS known as petrol.
“It’s the same World Bank that alerted about poverty levels rising to 104 million out of a population of 223 million, as a result of the rise in the cost of living brought about by the economic reforms.
“The World Bank kingpins comfortably sit in their office and think of the economy as a game of Chess and not about people, their families and their lives.
“At present, the Government is managing a Grenade with care and now telling it to remove the pin. Where would the World Bank be if the country is plunged into further chaos in a nation currently battling with security challenges?”
