10-year-old Needs 57m Euros For Heart Surgery

Ten-year-old Oluwanikemi Olasoji is in need of 57 million Euros to correct a congenital heart defect which was diagnosed from birth.

A statement by her father, Oluwafemi Olasoji, noted that she had an initial surgery in 2014 at The German Heart Center in Berlin, Germany, but needs further surgery to forestall life threatening implications.

According to him, Oluwanikemi has been an outpatient of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where her condition has been carefully monitored with several Eco tests done.

“She is now 10-years-old and with the results of the several Eco tests conducted, it has become imperative that she undergoes further Cardio Vascular Evaluation to replace her classified conduit and forestall the irreversible and life-threatening complications.

“All efforts to go back to the German hospital for the follow-up surgery have proved abortive because of the cost of the surgery, 57.3 million Euros. I am therefore pleading and soliciting for assistance to save the life of our dear daughter.”

Oluwanikemi’s medical report noted that she had a Congenital Heart Defect (Truncus Arteriosus) from birth, which was detected at seven weeks old at LUTH.

The initial surgery could not be done in Nigeria, so they were referred to a heart hospital outside Nigeria. The correction of Truncus Arteriosus and the ventricular septal defect closure was successfully done at The German Heart Center in Berlin Germany (now Charite Universitatsmedizin Berlin) on May 23, 2014.
