Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has made it clear that his main focus during his tenure is not on selling land in Abuja, but rather on advancing the city’s infrastructure.
In a speech delivered on Tuesday at the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the Pai community road in the Kwali Area Council, Wike expressed his commitment to fostering development throughout the capital.
Wike asserted that his administration’s agenda is centered around infrastructural improvements, emphasizing that these efforts will not be limited to urban areas alone. He highlighted the importance of extending development initiatives to rural regions as well, ensuring that all communities in the FCT benefit from government projects. “Let me tell you, and I want to say clearly, let everybody hear me: Ahmed Tinubu did not make me minister to come and sell land here,” Wike declared, signaling his intent to shift the focus away from land transactions towards significant infrastructure projects.
He further stressed the critical need for infrastructure, stating, “Our concern is infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure, and infrastructure. Is it in the city? Is it in rural areas?” This reiteration reflects his belief that a comprehensive approach to development is essential for the growth of the capital.
Wike also took the opportunity to challenge previous ministers, urging them to reflect on their contributions to rural development during their time in office. “So, some of those who have the opportunity to be minister here, who may be angry, who claim they love you, ask them, what happened when you were a minister? Did you come to the rural areas? Did you see them? Are you happy now?” he questioned, highlighting the importance of accountability and tangible results in governance.
In his remarks to contractors involved in the Pai community road project, Wike urged them to complete the work promptly, even suggesting that they aim to finish in less than 12 months. “If you can even try to do less than 12 months, your money is available,” he incentivized, underscoring the urgency and significance of the infrastructure improvements.
Concluding his speech, Wike reiterated a fundamental principle of governance, stating that it should not be confined to the political party in power. “Governance has nothing to do with having PDP. Governance has nothing to do with having APC,” he asserted, emphasizing that effective governance should prioritize the needs of the people rather than the interests of political figures.
His statements reflect a broader vision for governance that is inclusive and centered around the welfare of all citizens in the Federal Capital Territory.
