The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has expressed approval of the recent arrest of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, viewing it as a positive step in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
Following the news of Okowa’s arrest, the APC released a statement highlighting that this development demonstrates the administration’s commitment to addressing long-standing issues of financial misconduct and corruption both within Delta State and nationwide.
Okowa, who governed Delta State from 2015 to 2023, was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegations related to embezzlement and improper allocation of public funds during his term.
Reports indicate that the allegations involve questionable handling of state funds and contracts issued by his administration.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, and shared with reporters in Asaba, the APC praised the Federal Government for taking decisive action and encouraged the EFCC to pursue a comprehensive investigation into the finances of other former governors and officials.
The party underscored that this action aligns with broader national goals to fight corruption, uphold transparency, and ensure public funds benefit citizens rather than personal interests.
“The APC fully supports the arrest of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who led one of the most financially reckless administrations in recent history,” the statement said. “Under his leadership, substantial state funds were reportedly diverted for personal gain, including funding his political aspirations and pushing his preferred successor, against the will of Delta residents who were eager for change.”
The APC also stressed that the arrest should serve as a deterrent, affirming that public office holders must face accountability. “No individual, irrespective of their status or political ties, is beyond the reach of the law,” the statement concluded.
“We commend the administration’s commitment to rooting out corruption and are pleased to see strong steps being taken in this direction.”
