The Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, has overturned the previous policy that set the entry age for university admission at 18 years.
This policy, established by former Education Minister Professor Tahir Mamman, sparked considerable debate.
In a briefing with journalists on Tuesday following his appointment, Alausa argued that the policy undermined the federal government’s efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
He emphasized that maintaining a 16-year age limit is more sustainable for the education system, allowing for exceptions for “gifted children.”
Additionally, Alausa announced that Nigeria’s education model would shift to 80 percent practical training and 20 percent theoretical classroom instruction.
He stated that this emphasis on practical education aims to address the unemployment crisis in Nigeria, as higher education institutions should not continue to produce graduates without sufficient job opportunities.
Alausa also mentioned plans for the federal government to collaborate with private sector partners to provide training for students, maximizing their potential.
He was appointed as one of ten ministers who received new roles following last month’s cabinet reshuffle, which resulted in the departure of his predecessor. Prior to this role, he served as the Minister of State for Health.
