Policeman Killed, Another Injured in Gunmen’s Attack on Federal Lawmaker’s Convoy in Abia State
An attack by unidentified gunmen on a convoy associated with a federal lawmaker has led to the tragic death of one police officer and left another critically injured. The ambush took place on Sunday night around 9 p.m. in the Ubakala area of Umuahia South, Abia State, as the convoy was traveling through the region.
The convoy reportedly belongs to Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, the representative for Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and the current chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes. Onwusibe, however, was not present in the convoy at the time of the attack.
According to local reports, the gunmen, who were dressed in black attire and appeared to be wearing police jackets, blocked the convoy’s path before launching their assault. The motorcade included two police officers and a driver in a Toyota Corolla, who were providing security support for the lawmaker’s convoy.
Witnesses recount that the attackers confronted the convoy, and despite identifying themselves as police officers, the officers in the convoy were met with gunfire. In the ensuing exchange, one of the police officers lost his life on the scene, while his colleague sustained severe injuries and is reported to be in critical condition.
Following the initial attack, officers from the Ubakala Police Division arrived on the scene, prompting the gunmen to flee under gunfire from the responding officers. The police have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but sources indicate that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the ambush.
