The Enugu State Government has commended Finnish authorities for the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a prominent Finland-based figure who leads the Autopilots group.
In a statement issued by Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, Ekpa was denounced as a “common criminal, con artist, and terrorist” with actions that appear, according to the government, to prioritize personal gain over the well-being of the Igbo people.
The statement, released on Friday, criticized Ekpa for allegedly inciting violence and exploiting the sentiments of people across the South East. The government claimed that Ekpa’s activities have led to tragic loss of life and the destruction of property, weakening the social and economic fabric of the region.
Labeling Ekpa as a “murderer and fraudster,” the Enugu government argued that he has played a central role in destabilizing the region by promoting fear and inciting attacks that harm innocent citizens and disrupt local economies. Prof. Onyia emphasized that Enugu State stands ready to provide evidence of Ekpa’s actions, expressing confidence that such evidence could be instrumental in his prosecution, whether the trial takes place in Finland or in Nigeria.
“Simon Ekpa has, for far too long, exploited his position in Finland to spread messages of violence, fear, and division, ultimately damaging the industrious spirit that defines the Igbo people,” Onyia’s statement asserted. “His tactics involve manipulating and extorting his own people, under the pretense of advocating for their rights and the pursuit of Biafra’s independence.”
The government of Enugu highlighted that Ekpa’s arrest reflects the efforts of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, which has continuously called for international and regional action against those inciting violence in the South East. Officials expressed hope that Ekpa’s impending trial will pave the way for renewed peace and stability, offering the region an opportunity to rebuild and thrive.
Concluding the statement, the Enugu government reiterated its unwavering commitment to justice and security for all citizens. It called on other regional and national stakeholders to join in countering forces that jeopardize progress, reinforcing its dedication to creating a peaceful and prosperous environment for the South East.
