Jesutega Onokpasa, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has voiced his disappointment and strong disapproval over President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointment of Daniel Bwala as special adviser on policy communication.
Onokpasa argued that the decision felt like a “betrayal” to loyal supporters of the president, who had anticipated appointments that would reflect Tinubu’s commitment to his long-standing allies.
Bwala, who previously served as a spokesperson for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 presidential campaign, has a history of openly criticizing Tinubu. During his time with the PDP, Bwala made multiple allegations against Tinubu, including calls for his prosecution on alleged corruption charges and accusations of ties to drug-related funds forfeited in the United States. Given Bwala’s past critiques, his recent appointment has raised questions among many of Tinubu’s supporters.
During an interview on Arise TV’s News Night, Onokpasa expressed his dismay, saying, “Our dear and beloved President stabbed all of us, his staunch supporters, in the back with this absolutely ridiculous, meaningless, and just inexplicable appointment.” For Onokpasa, this appointment does not appear to be a strategic decision, as some have argued, but rather a misstep that risks alienating those who have consistently supported Tinubu’s leadership.
Onokpasa went further, criticizing what he sees as the president’s lack of regard for his loyal base. “Not all his supporters want an appointment,” he emphasized, explaining that many supporters are not seeking political roles themselves but do expect respect and acknowledgment from the administration. “It’s just the insult—that our president seems to take us, his supporters, for granted,” he added, highlighting his frustration over what he perceives as Tinubu’s willingness to disregard those who have stood by him.
This appointment, according to Onokpasa, reflects a concerning shift that could impact Tinubu’s relationship with core supporters. Onokpasa questioned the rationale behind the decision and expressed doubt about its potential benefit to the administration, calling it “stupidity” rather than a savvy political move. As reactions continue to emerge from within the APC, this appointment could signify a larger conversation about loyalty, support, and the priorities of Tinubu’s presidency.
