The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its determination to reclaim power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections. The party has outlined a strategic approach, beginning with efforts to foster unity across all levels of its membership and leadership structures, seeing this as essential to building a strong foundation for future success.
In a communique issued at the end of a recent PDP Governors Forum meeting held in Jos, the party called for complete alignment and cohesion among members as it gears up for the national elections. According to PDP leaders, this period marks the start of a long-term plan to reestablish the PDP as Nigeria’s most trusted platform for democratic governance, and they are urging all members to unite in pursuit of this goal.
Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, delivered the communique and emphasized that the party’s top priority is unity. Mohammed noted that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, originally scheduled for this month, has been postponed as a mark of respect and empathy for Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who recently lost his wife. The forum, he explained, was in full agreement that supporting Governor Eno in this difficult time took precedence, with a collective decision to hold the NEC meeting by February 2025. By then, PDP leaders intend to have addressed all outstanding leadership and governance matters.
In the seven-point communique, the governors acknowledged that both members and citizens alike are looking to the PDP to provide a viable alternative to the current administration. They said, “The forum wishes to state categorically that it is unwavering in its determination to foster unity and cohesion within this great party, which Nigerians have come to trust as the most credible platform for democratic governance.” The governors stressed the party’s commitment to upholding democratic values and providing effective representation for all Nigerians.
Addressing Nigeria’s challenging economic situation, the PDP governors expressed empathy with citizens who are experiencing hardship due to rising inflation, unemployment, and other economic pressures. They called on the federal government to review its current policies, emphasizing that a more people-centered approach is urgently needed to alleviate the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. The forum urged the government to consider reforms that could address the root causes of economic instability and provide relief to struggling families.
Additionally, the PDP governors raised serious concerns about the conduct of recent elections, particularly in Edo and Ondo states. The communique alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated results in favor of specific candidates, which the PDP believes undermines public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. In response, the governors demanded judicial and legislative intervention to thoroughly investigate these allegations. They emphasized that protecting the integrity of the electoral process is crucial to upholding democracy and ensuring that future elections are fair, transparent, and reflective of the people’s will.
