Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved the implementation of a new N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the state, signaling a major step forward in addressing the financial challenges faced by employees amid rising living costs.
The decision follows a two-day extensive meeting between the state government and representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Union Negotiating Council. The discussions centered on improving the welfare of workers and ensuring equitable compensation for their contributions to the state’s development.
Governor Uzodimma described the new wage policy as a testament to his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of Imo workers. He emphasized that the decision was informed by the harsh economic realities affecting citizens nationwide and the need to provide meaningful support to the working population.
As part of the comprehensive welfare package, the governor also announced plans to commence the payment of outstanding gratuities to retirees from both local and state governments starting Tuesday, November 26. Additionally, he pledged to review and increase pension allowances once the ongoing pension audit is completed, signaling a broader effort to address the needs of senior citizens who have served the state diligently.
In a further incentive for workers, Governor Uzodimma revealed that employees currently earning consolidated salaries of N70,000 or more will receive an extra 10 percent increase in their monthly pay, ensuring that all categories of workers benefit from the new policy.
To oversee the implementation of the minimum wage and the corresponding adjustments, a dedicated committee comprising representatives from the NLC, TUC, and the state government has been established. This collaborative approach is expected to ensure smooth execution and transparency in delivering the new wage structure.
Leaders of the NLC and TUC in Imo State expressed their gratitude to Governor Uzodimma, describing his approval of the new minimum wage as a landmark achievement for workers. They commended the administration for its responsiveness and promised that workers would reciprocate this gesture by enhancing their productivity and commitment to their duties.
With these measures, the Uzodimma administration has taken a significant step toward improving labor relations and alleviating the economic burdens faced by the state’s workforce.
