The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has emerged as a survivor of a harrowing boat accident that tragically claimed five lives, left six others injured, and resulted in 20 passengers going missing.
The devastating incident took place on Friday, November 22, 2024, along the Bennett Island River in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of the state.
Guwor, who was on his way back to Asaba after engaging with constituents in Warri, narrowly escaped disaster when the boat he was traveling in nearly collided with another vessel. The accident, which occurred in the afternoon, has deeply unsettled the Speaker, who is still processing the shock of the event.
In a heartfelt statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Speaker Guwor expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss of life.
“The Speaker is devastated by this tragic accident. His heart goes out to the families of those who perished in this calamity. He prays that God grants them the strength and solace they need to cope with this painful loss,” the statement conveyed.
While expressing his gratitude for being spared, Guwor also thanked the rescue and medical teams for their quick and effective response to the disaster. He emphasized the importance of such teams in moments of crisis.
The Speaker further called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident, stressing the need for accountability and measures to ensure that such a tragedy does not repeat itself. He said, “It is vital that we uncover the truth behind this incident to prevent future loss of life and to ensure safer travel on our waterways.”
In his emotional reflection, Guwor added, “I am still in disbelief, and my thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. I can only imagine the pain they are enduring at this moment. I pray that the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
