The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly detained a key organizer of the pro-democracy group, Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), in Kano State, identified only as Zubair.
The arrest occurred in the early hours of Thursday, and sources suggest that it may be linked to a Facebook post that was critical of the government.
TIB has since expressed concern over Zubair’s detention, claiming that the arrest is an attack on free speech and an attempt to silence opposition voices. The group has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their member, stressing the importance of upholding citizens’ rights to express dissent without fear of retaliation.
“The TIB organizer in Kano, Zubair, was arrested by the DSS earlier today. The reason for his arrest has not been officially confirmed, but sources have suggested it may be due to a Facebook post criticizing the government,” the group stated in a post on its social media platforms. They also mentioned that Zubair is reportedly being transferred to Abuja, fueling further concerns over his treatment and the potential escalation of the case.
The arrest has sparked further discussions around the state of freedom of expression in Nigeria, with many expressing fears that the government may be using security agencies to stifle critical voices and suppress dissent.
