The Nigerian Navy, under its Operation Delta Sanity, has successfully intercepted a significant shipment of illegal drugs and industrial chemicals being transported through the waterways of Akwa Ibom State.
On November 25, 2024, personnel from the Forward Operating Base IBAKA intercepted a large wooden boat in the Bendoyo and Uta Uyata general area, which was carrying an illicit haul of drugs and chemicals. The operation led to the arrest of three suspects who were reportedly involved in the illegal transportation.
The Navy’s statement, shared on its verified Facebook page, detailed the seizure, which included 125 bags of industrial chemicals, 820 tubes of pethidine, and 22,800 bottles of Codeine. These substances, particularly pethidine and Codeine, are known for their potential for abuse and are heavily regulated in Nigeria due to their role in contributing to the country’s growing drug abuse epidemic. The industrial chemicals seized could also pose significant risks to public health and safety if improperly handled or distributed.
According to the statement, the operation was part of the ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy to combat illicit activities along the country’s waterways, which have become major routes for smuggling and trafficking of various illegal goods. The interception was made possible through heightened vigilance and the strategic deployment of naval personnel who have been actively patrolling the region as part of Operation Delta Sanity, a military initiative designed to address various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, oil theft, and piracy, in the Niger Delta region.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Maritime Unit in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, on November 27, 2024. The NDLEA is now responsible for further investigation, processing, and prosecution of the individuals involved. The Navy emphasized its collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, including the NDLEA, to ensure that such illegal operations are swiftly dismantled, and the perpetrators are brought to justice.
