Bishop Mathew Kukah, the founder of The Kukah Centre, has called for improved communication strategies from President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging government spokespersons to prioritize constructive engagement over insults and dismissive attitudes.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Kukah emphasized that effective communication is crucial, particularly during a period of widespread poverty and economic challenges in Nigeria.
The Need for Constructive Engagement
Bishop Kukah stressed that the administration must urgently address the frustrations of Nigerians, who are grappling with economic hardship. He observed that while the government may have commendable plans, these are undermined by a lack of clear and constructive communication strategies.
“What I can say is that this government must respond urgently to the issues of the day. They are issues of massive impoverishment in Nigeria. You can see the frustration on the faces of people—husbands, wives, and children,” Kukah said.
He acknowledged the potential in the government’s vision but highlighted a gap in effectively conveying these ideas to the public. “I am convinced that this government has lofty ideas, but there is a total absence of a constructive strategy of engagement,” he added.
Clear Communication to Foster Trust
Kukah underscored the importance of providing clarity and reassurance to Nigerians about ongoing reforms, such as those related to local government autonomy and the proposed tax reform bills. He pointed out that building public trust requires the government to communicate transparently about its plans and timelines.
“This government needs communication strategies. The Nigerian government needs to convince Nigerians that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and encourage them to be a little patient,” he stated.
He further stressed the role of spokespersons, saying, “When people call themselves government spokespersons, it is not about insulting people or thinking others can’t have different views. Their job is to ensure that the government’s ideas are communicated effectively.”
Kukah also urged the administration to provide updates on tangible milestones, such as the Port Harcourt Refinery’s return to operation. “The government needs to tell people what to expect and when,” he said, emphasizing the importance of managing public expectations.
Avoiding the Blame Game
In addition to calling for better communication, Kukah warned against the government’s tendency to blame predecessors for Nigeria’s current challenges. He noted that leaders campaigning for office should have been aware of the nation’s issues and come prepared with solutions.
“By now, Nigerians are tired of hearing the government saying, ‘We didn’t think things were this bad.’ They must have had an idea of what was going on before contesting,” he remarked.
Kukah also stressed that government officials must focus on measurable progress. “When they say we have $30 million in our reserves, they should know the money should increase before they leave office. People come into government to solve problems, not to compound them. And you must have round pegs in round holes.”
Winning and Retaining Public Trust
Bishop Kukah concluded with a reminder that governance should be about serving the people and earning their continued loyalty. “Government must not take the loyalty of people for granted. Winning elections isn’t just about getting into power and then waiting to win another one,” he said.
