Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a stern warning to school principals against allowing students to gather and welcome him during his visits.
The minister made this statement while commissioning the construction of a 9.8-kilometre road from Kabusa to Takushara, at the permanent site of Government Secondary School Kabusa, on Tuesday, November 3, 2024.
His remarks came in response to the sight of students who had been lined up outside their classrooms to welcome him during his visit to the area. Wike expressed his disapproval of the practice, emphasizing that it was neither necessary nor appropriate for students to be removed from their studies to participate in such ceremonial events. He made it clear that this practice would no longer be tolerated.
The minister stressed that school management and principals must prioritize the education and well-being of students over ceremonial protocols. “It is not part of our culture to have students lining up to welcome dignitaries, and I assure you, this will be the last time such a thing happens. No one should be bringing students out of their classrooms to line up on the road,” Wike declared firmly.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of students, saying, “We will not accept this practice any longer. Our children deserve the best, and their education should always come first.” This statement reflects his broader vision of ensuring that students’ academic interests are not compromised by unnecessary distractions.
