Tinubu Directs Funds to Address Pension Arrears and Salary Increments for Retired Military Personnel

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the release of funds to settle pension arrears, salary adjustments, and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.

This directive follows peaceful protests by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance earlier this week, demanding the resolution of their outstanding benefits.

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, disclosed the President’s decision in a statement on Friday, commending Tinubu for his swift response to the veterans’ concerns. Matawalle noted that the President’s intervention underscores his commitment to the welfare of both retired and serving members of the armed forces.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, military personnel have already begun receiving notifications about the disbursement of their three-month salary increments.

Prioritizing Military Welfare

Matawalle expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for facilitating the timely release of funds to settle long-standing pension arrears and other benefits. He emphasized that these actions reflect the administration’s dedication to addressing the financial challenges faced by military personnel.

The Minister also acknowledged the role of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, in ensuring the effective distribution of the funds. Matawalle urged the military to stay committed to their duties, assuring them of the government’s determination to improve their welfare and boost morale.

“Despite previous delays, the President is focused on uplifting the Nigerian military as they tackle the challenges of insecurity,” Matawalle said.

Strengthening the Military’s Role

Highlighting the critical role of the Nigerian Armed Forces in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other criminal activities, Matawalle reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to eliminating insecurity nationwide. He reiterated that President Tinubu’s government prioritizes strengthening the military’s capacity and resilience to safeguard the country.

The statement concluded with an assurance that the government remains unwavering in its support for the armed forces, recognizing their contributions to national security and promising continued investment in their welfare and operational preparedness.

This move is seen as a significant step toward addressing the long-standing grievances of military veterans while reinforcing the government’s focus on national security and the well-being of those who serve.
