The chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State’s 27 local government areas have rejected the expulsion of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmaker representing Ideato North/South Constituency.
Following an emergency meeting convened to discuss the current state of the party, the local government chairmen issued a vote of confidence in Ugochinyere, reaffirming his leadership within the party.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Forum of Imo PDP Local Government Chairmen, Barrister Uche Alisigwe, declared that Ugochinyere remains one of the key leaders of the PDP in the state. The forum, which includes all 27 local government chairmen of the party in Imo, resolved to appoint Ugochinyere as the state leader of the PDP, recognizing his crucial role in guiding the party’s reorganization and restructuring efforts.
The statement emphasized the dire situation of the party, citing the need for urgent action to prevent PDP’s collapse in Imo. The chairmen lamented the lack of central coordination in the party following the exit of key stakeholders and vowed to support Ugochinyere in rebuilding the party’s structure. “This decision is to empower Ugochinyere to lead the reorganization, restructuring, and reconciliation processes that will help rebuild and reform Imo PDP, and to resolve the crisis that has plagued the party across all 27 local governments,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the chairmen expressed their appreciation for Ugochinyere’s leadership in opposing attempts by political actors, particularly Sam Anyawu and Umar Damagun, to align the party with the All Progressives Congress (APC). They commended Ugochinyere for his efforts to “cleanse the PDP of political sellouts and traitors,” which they attributed to individuals working against the party’s interests in preparation for the 2027 general election.
The forum concluded by pledging their full support for Ugochinyere’s efforts to rid the party of the influence of what they termed “shameless political agents” and wished him success in his battle to remove Anyawu and Damagun from the party.
This strong backing from the local government chairmen highlights the growing rift within the Imo PDP, as internal divisions and accusations of disloyalty continue to shake the party’s foundation.
