Atiku Sends Message to Ghana President-elect, John Mahama

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated John Mahama on his victory in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election. The message was shared via Atiku’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, following Mahama’s decisive win over the ruling party’s candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.

Atiku described the outcome as a “landslide victory” for Mahama, further expressing his warm congratulations to the newly-elected president. In his post, Atiku wrote, “Your Excellency, Mr. President-elect John Mahama, @JDMahama. My warmest congratulations on your victory. I was told you were on your way to church and thought I could catch up with you before you entered the church for the Sunday service. Once again, kindly accept my hearty congratulations on your landslide victory.”

Atiku’s message came shortly after Bawumia, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat and congratulated Mahama. During a press conference, Bawumia acknowledged the results, stating, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility.”

Following the call from Bawumia, John Mahama confirmed via his own X account that he had received the congratulatory call from his opponent. The exchange between Mahama and Bawumia was seen as an important moment in Ghana’s democratic process, demonstrating a smooth and peaceful transition of power.
