The Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Cross River State has directed its members to close all magistrate courts in the state starting Monday, December 9, 2024.
The directive, announced by MAN Chairman Godwin Onah and Secretary Solomon Abuo in a notice on Sunday, signals the beginning of an indefinite strike over unresolved demands presented to the state government.
Reasons for the Strike
According to the notice, the decision follows a series of unaddressed grievances raised by the magistrates. These demands were outlined in a communiqué issued after a general meeting on November 5, 2024.
The association had previously extended its strike notice to November 22, 2024, in a letter to the Governor of Cross River State, urging the government to address their concerns. Following no progress, the association staged a warning strike from November 27 to November 29, 2024.
Despite these efforts, MAN claims the state government has failed to meet their demands or initiate negotiations.
Strict Compliance Expected
The association has instructed all magistrates across Cross River State to cease official duties, including court sittings, until further notice.
“All magistrates must adhere strictly to this Bulletin No. 2 by abstaining from performing all official duties, including court sittings, from Monday, December 9, 2024, till further notice,” the notice emphasized.
The Demands
Although the specific details of the eight demands were not disclosed in the notice, the association has expressed frustration over the government’s inaction and lack of dialogue.
Implications
The indefinite closure of magistrate courts is expected to disrupt judicial proceedings across Cross River State, potentially delaying the dispensation of justice.
The Cross River State Government has yet to issue an official response to the strike announcement.
