The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has embarked on a series of high-level consultative meetings with stakeholders across Nigeria as part of its push for the creation of Anioma State.
The organization views the proposed state as a vital step toward uniting the Igbo Nation, addressing historical inequities, and enhancing economic opportunities within the region.
Historical and Cultural Significance
In a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the group emphasized the deep historical and cultural roots of the Anioma State proposal. “The creation of Anioma State honors the sacrifices and patriotism of the Anioma people, particularly during the Nigeria-Biafra War,” Isiguzoro stated. The initiative aims to foster unity within the Igbo community and ensure equitable representation in Nigeria’s geopolitical structure.
Ohanaeze highlighted the importance of correcting historical imbalances that have left parts of the Igbo Nation underrepresented in Nigeria’s federal framework. Ohanaeze acknowledged these setbacks but insisted that lessons learned would guide the current campaign.

To build momentum, Ohanaeze has initiated consultations with influential figures across Nigeria, including allies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Southwest. These discussions, which began on November 7, 2024, will continue with the Presidency, the National Assembly, and regional leaders. The organization has set a timeline for concluding consultations by December 31, 2024.
The strategy also includes advocating for the creation of an additional state in every geopolitical zone, aligning Anioma State’s cause with broader national interests. This approach aims to garner widespread support and mitigate opposition from other regions.
