Sanusi Bature, the Director General of Media and Communication to Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has publicly stated that he is prepared to resist any attempts at police arrest. Bature revealed that he had gone into hiding at the Kano State Government House for five days in order to avoid being apprehended by the police.
In his address at the PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship event in Kano, Bature disclosed that at least 40 officers from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Team were deployed to Kano six days ago with the explicit aim of arresting him.
Bature explained that his stay in the Government House was due to the constitutional immunity afforded to officials within the premises, which prevents their arrest unless specifically authorized by the governor. He added that he had obtained a court order restraining the police from arresting him, which provided the legal grounds for his participation in the event. “I had a court order restraining the police from arresting me, and that’s why I could attend this event. It was mandatory for me to be here,” he said.
Addressing the situation further, Bature explained that despite the ongoing arrest attempt, he felt confident in his legal position. He said, “There was a petition filed against me, and it seems only the Inspector General himself is handling it. He sent 40 officers from the IG Monitoring Team squad to Kano since Sunday with a clear mandate to arrest me.”
He continued, “I came out for three reasons: first, I didn’t think I should miss this event, even if it meant risking arrest. Second, I secured a court order, which, while not yet officially served to the police, has gone viral, and I’m sure they’ve seen it. Third, I am well fortified to resist arrest if it happens.”
Bature’s statements highlight both his defiance against the arrest attempt and his belief in the legal protections he has secured.
