The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has strongly refuted claims that it approved a “long-cleansing herbal tea” designed for smokers.
In a statement issued on Saturday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the product, known as Lungitox (Smokers Pride), was not granted registration by the agency.
NAFDAC explained that the individual behind the product had applied for registration, but the application was outrightly rejected. The rejection stemmed from the product’s misleading and dangerous claim that it could make smoking “healthy” when consumed in conjunction with the herbal tea.
The agency emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting public health by ensuring that only safe, effective, and scientifically validated products are approved. NAFDAC condemned the promotion of misleading claims that could pose a risk to public safety and wellbeing.
The statement read, “NAFDAC has been made aware of a misleading video circulating on social media, which falsely claims that the agency has approved a herbal product promoting the idea that smoking can be healthy when used with this product. We categorically state that these claims are entirely false. The product in question, Lung Detox Tea, Lungitox (Smokers Pride), or any related product, is not registered by NAFDAC.”
The agency continued, “While the individual behind this product did submit an application for approval, it was rejected due to the unfounded and hazardous claim that smoking could be rendered ‘healthy’ by using the product. NAFDAC will not approve any product that poses a threat to public health or misleads consumers.”
NAFDAC reiterated its role in safeguarding public health by ensuring that only scientifically supported and thoroughly tested products are authorized for public use. The agency strongly cautioned the public to disregard any false or deceptive claims, particularly those that could endanger health.
