Governor Alex Otti Declares His Independence and Commitment to Faith-Driven Governance in Abia State
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has firmly stated that his sole “godfather” is God, emphasizing that his administration operates without the influence of external political forces. In a clear assertion of his independence, Otti explained that he does not allow any individual or group to dictate the course of his governance, reinforcing that his leadership is solely guided by his faith.
During his address, Otti highlighted the difficulties that often arise from political sponsorship, noting how many elected officials feel pressured by their benefactors to act in ways that may not align with the needs or values of the people they represent. He made it clear that his administration is immune to such pressures, standing strong and resolute in its commitment to serve the people of Abia.

These remarks were made during a Thanksgiving service at St. James Methodist Church in Umuda, Isingwu, in the Umuahia North Local Government Area. The event was organized by Hon. Smart Ihuoma, the Mayor of the council, and attended by a large gathering of citizens. Otti used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to transparency and good governance, emphasizing his open-door policy, which welcomes suggestions but makes it clear that such input will only be considered if it benefits the people of Abia.
Addressing the challenges of political dependency, Otti pointed out that many politicians who owe their positions to the financial or political support of others often find themselves at the mercy of their benefactors. However, he reassured the people of Abia that his government operates independently, free from any such influence. “Our only godfather is the God in heaven,” he stated, reinforcing his resolve to lead with integrity and without outside interference.
Otti also alluded to the example set by Dr. Chris Ngige’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, beginning in 1999. Ngige, who faced significant challenges but managed to drive meaningful change during his time in office, set a benchmark for future leaders in the state. Otti suggested that just as Anambra’s citizens remain vigilant to protect their democracy from regression, Abia’s people would also hold future administrations to a high standard, expecting nothing less than tangible progress.
