Wike Accuses Peter Odili of Treating Rivers State as a Personal Estate
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili, accusing him of treating the state as his private estate.
This came in response to remarks by Odili, who claimed Governor Simi Fubara had resisted Wike’s alleged attempts to dominate Rivers State politics through what he described as a “ferocious but unnecessary political war.”
Wike, speaking through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, dismissed Odili’s claims, alleging that the former governor has entrenched his family in prominent state positions.
“Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State into a personal estate?” Wike queried. “His wife is the Chairperson of a Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, another daughter is a judge, and he acts as the ‘General Overseer.’”
Allegations of Nepotism
Wike further alleged that Odili prioritizes his family’s interests over others, citing an incident where Odili reportedly replaced his late elder brother’s son with his own daughter for a commissioner nomination.
“His nephew, his late elder brother’s son, was recommended for a commissioner position, but he took the slot and gave it to his daughter. Is that the behavior of an elder statesman?” Wike asked.
He also suggested that Odili’s influence might extend beyond political appointments, hinting sarcastically, “I am sure if care is not taken, he could even arrange a marriage for the governor.”

The exchange highlights an escalating political feud between Wike and Odili, with both leaders trading accusations over the control and direction of Rivers State politics. Wike’s comments underscore a broader debate about the role of political influence and nepotism in governance, as well as the balance of power in the state.
