Tinubu to Announce Ambassadorial Appointments Soon: Presidency
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to unveil his list of ambassadors in the coming weeks, according to Ademola Oshodi, Senior Special Adviser on Foreign Affairs and Protocol. Oshodi shared this update during Channels Television’s 2024 Year-In-Review program on Sunday.
“In the next few weeks, there will be a pronouncement regarding the ambassadors, followed by Senate deliberations and necessary accreditations to position them in their respective missions worldwide,” Oshodi said.
Context of Ambassadorial Recall
On September 2, 2023, three months into his presidency, Tinubu made a significant diplomatic move by recalling all Nigerian ambassadors stationed across more than 100 embassies and high commissions globally. This decision was explained by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who emphasized that ambassadors serve at the President’s discretion, granting him the authority to recall or appoint them as deemed necessary.
Prolonged Delay Sparks Concerns
Despite the recall, 16 months have passed without new ambassadorial nominations for Senate approval or deployment. During this period, Nigeria has continued to host foreign ambassadors in Abuja, raising questions about the delay in naming new envoys.
Oshodi, however, defended the timeline, explaining that the delay is due to efforts to establish a solid foundation for the new appointments.
“The ambassadors are coming. The groundwork is being laid to ensure everything is in place for their assignments. Currently, chargé d’affaires and consul generals are managing diplomatic duties, serving as a prelude to the arrival of the ambassadors,” Oshodi clarified.
Addressing Foreign Missions’ Challenges
Oshodi also acknowledged the poor state of many Nigerian foreign missions, which he said the Tinubu administration inherited. He noted that significant repairs and upgrades are necessary to prepare the facilities for incoming ambassadors and their families.
“The missions are not in dire straits, but they weren’t in great shape when the President took office. The administration is focused on improving these facilities to accommodate ambassadors, dignitaries, and diplomats appropriately,” Oshodi explained.
He further pointed out that delays in ambassadorial appointments are not unprecedented, citing the previous administration’s 20-month gap before appointing envoys.
“This administration is committed to ensuring that ambassadors are properly set up for success. While the process may seem slow, it is being handled with careful consideration,” he concluded.
With the President’s announcement expected soon, all eyes remain on how these appointments will shape Nigeria’s foreign policy and international presence.
