The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, the state’s highest political decision-making body, has given its full backing to the recent leadership change in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Recall that on Monday, 32 lawmakers voted to impeach the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, citing gross misconduct and abuse of office as the primary reasons for his removal. In his place, the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda (Apapa I), was elected as the new Speaker of the Assembly.
According to Western Post, the GAC expressed its support for the lawmakers’ decision to remove Obasa, and also endorsed the new leadership under Speaker Meranda.
Following a meeting with the GAC, Speaker Meranda spoke to the press, revealing that the lawmakers sought the council’s approval for the leadership change. She expressed the Assembly’s satisfaction with the GAC’s endorsement of the decision.
The allegations against the former Speaker included numerous financial mismanagements and statutory breaches during his tenure. Prior to becoming Speaker, Meranda served as the Assembly’s Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker.
Additionally, the Conference of 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen in Lagos State congratulated Meranda on her election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued by the group’s Chairman, Alabi Kolade David, and Public Relations Officer, Olusesan Daini, they commended Meranda’s dedication, competence, and unwavering commitment to public service.
The group noted that her election embodies the progressive and inclusive values of the state, and they expressed confidence in her ability to provide strong legislative leadership, foster development, and uphold democratic principles.
The Chairmen also vowed to collaborate with the new Speaker to ensure a successful tenure and the continued advancement of Lagos State.
