Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has called on Lagosians to resist any attempts by All Progressives Congress (APC) politicians to undermine their rights to decide who governs the state.
Gists9ja reports that Rhodes-Vivour made this statement on Monday in reaction to the impeachment of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who faced allegations of financial misappropriation.
The impeachment has stirred controversy within the Lagos political landscape, particularly regarding the reported governorship aspirations of Obasa, which appear to clash with those of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Following Obasa’s removal, the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Miranda, representing Apapa State Constituency 1, was sworn in as the new Speaker.
Reacting on his social media platform, Rhodes-Vivour questioned the timing of the corruption allegations against Obasa and the apparent inaction of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the governorship rivalry surfaced.
“It’s interesting that the EFCC just realized the corruption of APC Lagos politicians. It is not a coincidence that they all have ambition to become the next governor,” he remarked.
Rhodes-Vivour also criticized what he perceives as an attempt by President Tinubu to position Lagos as a personal asset to benefit his family and loyalists. He accused APC leaders of prioritizing their ambitions over the state’s democratic principles.
“Your principal has just indirectly communicated that Lagos is his birthright and that of his descendants, and every aspiring APC politician exists solely to further his interest and that of his family.
“I have said this before and will say it again: Lagos is bigger than him, and we must remind him that Lagos is not his to bequeath,” he added.

Rhodes-Vivour urged Lagosians to stand firm in defending the state’s democratic values and to resist any attempts to concentrate political power in the hands of a few individuals. His remarks highlight the growing tensions within Lagos politics as stakeholders prepare for the next election cycle.
