On Monday, the Lagos State Police Command apprehended a group of individuals believed to be supporters of the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, near the assembly complex.
Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was removed from office due to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The group of men, reportedly loitering around the assembly complex after Obasa’s impeachment, were detained by the police. In a viral video, the detained individuals, locked inside a police van, identified themselves as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Obasa’s constituency, Orile Agege.
“We are about 20 here, and we are from Orile Agege. We are APC youths,” one of the detainees explained through the van’s window shutters. The individuals further expressed confusion over their arrest, stating they had not been given a clear reason for their detention.
While in custody, the men pleaded with passersby for food and water and began chanting “On Your Mandate,” a popular slogan among supporters of President Bola Tinubu.
In the wake of Obasa’s impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the Deputy Speaker, was elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, making history as the first female to hold the position in the state’s history.
The incident highlights the tensions within Lagos State politics following Obasa’s removal, and the police’s swift intervention underscores the delicate balance of law and order as new leadership takes over.
