Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have formally briefed the Governance Advisory Committee (GAC), the apex political body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, on the recent change in the House’s leadership.
Gists9ja reports that the meeting, which took place at Lagos House, Marina, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, lawmakers, and key party leaders.
During the session, several lawmakers shared their experiences under the leadership of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday. One legislator in particular recounted a particularly troubling ordeal, revealing the intense personal toll Obasa’s alleged maltreatment had on him. According to a source who spoke to The Sun Newspaper, the lawmaker shared that he had nearly taken his own life due to the treatment he received after contesting the Speaker’s seat against Obasa.
The lawmaker explained, “For daring to contest the seat of Speaker against Obasa after the election, I nearly committed suicide due to the way I was treated. None of my colleagues in the House dared to communicate or relate with me during Obasa’s reign nobody dared to greet me nor respond to my greeting. I was ostracized. If not for the people I am representing, I would have run away from the House.”
This testimony highlights the tense and often hostile atmosphere under Obasa’s leadership, shedding light on the personal struggles faced by some lawmakers during his tenure. The revelations also provide insight into the deep divisions within the House, which ultimately led to the impeachment of the former Speaker.
