Lagos Assembly on High Alert as Supporters of Impeached Lagos Speaker, Obasa, Disappear After Arrest

The whereabouts of the supporters of the impeached Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who were arrested on Monday, remained unknown as of Tuesday.

Gists9ja reports that Obasa was removed from office by 32 out of 40 lawmakers, with Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda subsequently taking over as the new Speaker. In the aftermath of his impeachment, around 15 of his supporters had gathered at the Assembly complex to protest the decision, but they were rounded up by security operatives. The protesters were detained in a van stationed at the Assembly gate.

Several of those who managed to flee the scene and were found loitering nearby were also arrested.

When contacted by The PUNCH, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Task Force, Raheem Gbadeyan, denied the agency’s involvement in the arrests. He suggested that the operation might have been carried out by the Commissioner of Police and directed inquiries to the police.

Attempts to reach the Lagos Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, for confirmation about the arrests were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.

However, a source within the community informed The PUNCH that the arrested supporters were released later that night.
“They have returned to the community. They were released around 11 pm on Monday,” the source revealed.
