The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed rumors suggesting that Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, is considering defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, described these claims as unfounded during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
Recent reports speculated on the possible defection of at least five first-term governors from opposition parties, including Alex Otti of Abia State. Others mentioned in the reports were Peter Mbah of Enugu, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, and Umoh Eno of Akwa Ibom, all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Both the PDP and Labour Party are currently navigating internal challenges following the aftermath of the 2023 elections.
Responding to the allegations, Mr. Ifoh firmly stated that there is no basis for the claim that Governor Otti is planning to leave the Labour Party.
“It is nothing but a baseless rumor, and we believe it will remain so. Governor Alex Otti has assured us of his loyalty to the Labour Party, and we have no reason to doubt him. Despite some challenges within the party, we are working to address them, and Otti has shown unwavering commitment,” Ifoh said.
While acknowledging that political defections are not uncommon in Nigeria’s democratic system, Ifoh emphasized that Governor Otti is not contemplating joining the APC.
“Defections have been a part of our political landscape, and the courts have repeatedly provided interpretations regarding such cases under Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution. Although it’s not unusual for governors to switch parties, there is no truth to the rumor that Governor Otti is among those considering such a move,” he added.
Ifoh linked the speculation about defections to the difficulties some opposition governors encounter in managing their states but reiterated that the rumors surrounding Otti lack substance.
“The Labour Party remains strong, and Governor Otti is firmly with us. We are confident that by 2027, the party will expand its influence and secure more governorship seats,” he concluded.
This statement aims to quell concerns within the Labour Party while reinforcing the party’s confidence in Governor Otti’s allegiance ahead of the next election cycle.
