The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of its member, Barrister Chinedu Nwowu, by unidentified assailants in Mgbidi, Imo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening, sparking outrage and concerns over the safety of legal practitioners and citizens across the country.
NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), described Nwowu’s murder as a grievous loss to his family, the legal profession, and society at large. He called for urgent action to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday, the NBA said:
“This heinous act is not only a grievous loss to his family, friends, and colleagues but also an assault on the legal profession and humanity. This unfortunate incident once again raises serious concerns about the security and safety of citizens across the country.”
The NBA has demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the murder and the swift arrest of those responsible. The association urged security agencies to expedite their efforts to apprehend the culprits.
“The NBA unequivocally condemns this senseless act of violence and calls on the relevant security agencies to ensure that those responsible for this atrocious crime are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” the statement read.
In response to the incident, the NBA directed its branches in Imo State to collaborate with law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to uncover the circumstances surrounding Nwowu’s murder.
The association also emphasized the importance of vigilance among its members.
“We demand that the perpetrators of this dastardly act face the full wrath of the law. The NBA also urges all members to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their personal security while discharging their professional duties,” it added.
President Osigwe reaffirmed the NBA’s commitment to ensuring that the legal profession operates in an environment free from fear and intimidation. He pledged the association’s continued collaboration with authorities to enhance security for its members and the general public.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Chinedu Nwowu during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” Osigwe concluded.
Nwowu’s murder has reignited concerns about the rising insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region. The NBA’s response underscores the need for urgent reforms to address violence and ensure the protection of citizens and professionals alike.
