The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to its impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, urging him to avoid actions that could destabilize the legislative arm and escalate political tensions in the state.
This comes after Obasa, who returned from the United States on Saturday, addressed his supporters, claiming his January 13 impeachment did not follow due process.
In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, the lawmakers reaffirmed their decision to impeach Obasa over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement, while reiterating their support for the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
The statement emphasized that the impeachment process was constitutionally sound, with over two-thirds of the lawmakers supporting the move.
“It is imperative to clarify that over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We stand by the decision taken to impeach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and we shall defend our position to the latter,” the statement read.
The lawmakers expressed their commitment to good governance and maintaining a harmonious relationship with other arms of government, stressing their constitutional right to remove principal officers when necessary.
The Assembly described Obasa’s recent remarks and actions as “uncalled for and unparliamentary,” urging him to prioritize peace for the state’s stability.
“I appeal to the former Speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony as being followed by others, as the current intransigent posture will heat the polity and not augur well,” Olukayode added.
The Assembly warned that any attempt to destabilize the legislature would be resisted by the majority of its members who support Speaker Meranda.
The lawmakers pledged to protect the Assembly’s integrity and ensure peace across Lagos State.
“Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” the statement concluded.
Obasa’s removal follows serious allegations of misconduct and mismanagement during his tenure as Speaker.
