Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has urged President Bola Tinubu to increase his international engagements, arguing that frequent travel is necessary for advancing Nigeria’s global interests.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Tuggar stated that Tinubu’s current travel frequency is insufficient to achieve the country’s diplomatic and economic objectives.
Despite public criticism of the President’s foreign trips, the Minister highlighted their significance in strengthening relationships with world leaders, attracting investment, and fostering diplomatic ties.
Tinubu’s Achievements Abroad
Tuggar pointed to Tinubu’s accomplishments on the international stage, including securing $2 billion in investment during a single visit to Brazil. He emphasized that these achievements demonstrate the tangible benefits of the President’s travels.
“This administration is still new. He was sworn in in 2023. In global terms, he is still a new President. He needs to interact with his colleagues, fellow heads of state, to establish relationships, and you can see the fruits of these trips. Look at the benefits. You travel once and you get $2 billion of investment like he did in Brazil. In fact, we are not travelling enough. I should suggest that we should do more,” Tuggar said.
Tinubu’s Travel Record
Since his inauguration in May 2023, President Tinubu has spent approximately 96 days abroad by May 2024. His travels have taken him to countries including France, the United States, India, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, among others.
Addressing Cost Concerns
Critics have raised concerns about the financial implications of Tinubu’s frequent trips, particularly given Nigeria’s economic challenges. However, Tuggar dismissed these concerns, arguing that the benefits outweigh the costs.
“Nigeria has the money. How much does travelling cost compared to the benefits? And how much does it cost when you’re comparing it to the things that the President has already addressed? How much were we wasting on fuel subsidy, electricity subsidy, and all those subsidies?” the Minister queried.
