Elder statesman and former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, has made controversial remarks about the #EndSARS movement, claiming it was orchestrated by the Obidient movement as part of a larger effort to undermine President Bola Tinubu.
In an interview with Edmund Obilo, which has since gone viral, Akande alleged that the #EndSARS protest was meticulously planned with significant financial backing, including support from the United States, and was introduced into Nigeria with the specific goal of targeting Tinubu.
According to Akande, the Obidient movement—a political group supporting Peter Obi—was the driving force behind the #EndSARS protests. He claimed that the protests were not a spontaneous outcry over police brutality, but a calculated effort to bring down Tinubu.
“EndSARS was designed to be the end of Tinubu. Those behind the EndSARS knew that’s what they were doing,” Akande asserted during the interview.
When asked to clarify who was responsible for the movement, Akande pointed directly to the Obidient movement, which had been backing Obi’s presidential bid.
“The Obidients were behind EndSARS; it was manufactured in America and brought in just to stop him (Tinubu),” Akande stated.
He further explained that the Obidient movement had initially aimed to form a political party following the protests but, when that effort failed, it integrated into existing political parties, aligning with whichever party they could join.
Akande elaborated on the claim that EndSARS was an internationally funded operation, stating that it was well-planned and supported by a large amount of money from America. He suggested that the whole operation was essentially an ambush against President Tinubu, adding that he was unaware of the plot.
When the interviewer pressed Akande on whether the Obidients were directly tied to Peter Obi’s political party, Akande expressed uncertainty.
“Well, maybe Obi’s party, I don’t know, maybe Obi’s movement, I don’t know, but the Obidients were behind the EndSARS,” he responded.
Akande’s remarks have raised significant controversy, as they directly link the #EndSARS movement with a political strategy to undermine President Tinubu’s leadership. These claims further intensify the already heated political atmosphere surrounding the Obidient movement, which continues to be a significant force in Nigerian politics.
