The Kebbi State Government, under the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris, has finalized plans to organize a mass wedding for 600 individuals, comprising 300 grooms and 300 brides. As part of this initiative, the government will provide ₦180,000 as dowry for each couple.
Speaking at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday, the Chairman of the Mass Wedding Committee, Suleman Argungu, disclosed that screening committees have been set up to ensure that all selected couples meet the necessary criteria.
Eligibility and Screening Process
Argungu outlined that the screening process will include:
- Pre-marital health screenings to ensure compatibility.
- Verification of employment or trade status of the grooms to assess their financial capability.
- Consideration for orphans, widows, and people with special needs, with inclusivity across all tribal and religious backgrounds.
The initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens on less privileged individuals who wish to get married but lack the necessary resources.
Ex-Minister Kabiru Turaki Granted Bail Over Alleged False Marriage and Adultery
Meanwhile, a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, following his arraignment on charges of false marriage, adultery, and criminal intimidation.
The court set his bail at ₦1 million after he pleaded not guilty to the charges during his hearing on Thursday.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The case, prosecuted by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abuja, originated from a petition dated August 9, 2024.
According to the prosecutor, Chijioke Okorie, Turaki is facing charges under Sections 383, 387, and 389 of the Penal Code, which criminalize:
- False marriage (marrying under deceptive circumstances)
- Adultery
- Criminal intimidation
The case remains ongoing, with legal proceedings set to continue in the coming weeks.
