Senate President Godswill Akpabio has condemned what he describes as uninformed criticisms directed at him and the Nigerian Senate on social media.
His remarks came in response to widespread backlash following his altercation with Senator Natasha Akpoti and public debates surrounding the proposed Tax Reform Bills.
Speaking during a public hearing on the bills on Monday, Akpabio expressed frustration that many Nigerians were forming opinions without reading the actual legislative documents, instead relying solely on social media narratives.
Akpabio Calls for Informed Public Engagement
Addressing participants at the hearing, Akpabio urged Nigerians to take time to review the bills thoroughly before making judgments or contributing to discussions.
“I’m tired of social media discussions on tax. I want to stay with you for two days and have a proper discussion. So I call on all Nigerians who have concerns about these bills—read them before you comment.”
He further criticized some leaders for publicly opposing the reforms without first reviewing the documents, adding that discussions should be based on facts rather than misconceptions fueled by online debates.
“Even some of our leaders never opened a page of these bills before they started appearing on television to condemn them,” he said.
Encourages Proper Review of Tax Bills
Akpabio urged attendees to use the two-day hearing as an opportunity to listen, analyze the proposals, and contribute meaningfully.
“If you don’t have copies, ask the chairman to give you one. Listen to others today, then go through the bills, identify areas of concern, and bring your contributions when we meet again tomorrow.”
He emphasized that the Senate would not operate based on social media sentiments, urging Nigerians to engage with legislative processes through informed dialogue.
“For me, I will not run the Nigerian Senate based on what they write on social media.”
A Call for Constructive Policy Debate
With tax reforms being a critical issue in Nigeria’s economic landscape, Akpabio’s comments highlight the need for a fact-based public debate, urging citizens and stakeholders to engage constructively rather than relying on online speculations.
