The Labour Party (LP) has announced an extension of its membership registration and revalidation exercise, a move approved by its National Working Committee (NWC) in preparation for the 2025 Anambra governorship election.
Extended Deadlines and Congress Dates
In an official statement released by the party’s spokesperson, Obiorah Ifoh, the deadline for the registration and revalidation process has been extended to May 2025. Additionally, the party has scheduled its ward, local government, and state congresses to take place between June and July 2025.
The decision aims to ensure wider participation and a transparent selection process as the party prepares for its governorship primaries in Anambra State.
Commitment to a Transparent Primary Election
The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible primary election in Anambra, emphasizing the need for an honest and transparent leadership selection process in Nigeria.
According to Ifoh, Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, speaking at the NWC meeting in Abuja, dismissed allegations that the party was collaborating with other political parties to undermine its members.
Abure reaffirmed that LP remains an independent political force, stating:
“I want to reassure our members in Anambra State that, as is customary with our party, our primaries and congresses will be free, fair, and credible.”
Labour Party’s Independence and Growing Influence
Addressing speculation that LP was working for another political party, Abure clarified that the Labour Party operates independently and is not aligned with any other party.
“Because rumors have been circulating that the Labour Party is working for another party, I want to make it clear that Labour Party is independent of any other political party.
We have built this party with a distinct ideology, program, and philosophy, and we cannot allow it to be controlled by another political party,” he stated.
LP’s Growing Influence in Nigerian Politics
Since its rise to prominence, particularly in the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party has established itself as a major political force in Nigeria. With the upcoming Anambra governorship election, the party aims to solidify its presence and build on its momentum.
