Lagos residents have been urged to plan their movements ahead of an upcoming traffic diversion due to emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, which connects to the Marina/CMS route.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Oshiyemi, confirmed the planned diversion in a statement released on Sunday. According to him, the road closure will begin on March 19 and continue until May 26.
Affected Roads and Closures
Oshiyemi explained that during the repair period:
- The road from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge will be closed to vehicles.
- The service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge inbound Independence Bridge will also be inaccessible.
- However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open to traffic.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease traffic congestion, motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
- To Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way
- Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → Ring Road.
- To 3rd Mainland Bridge
- Take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Alfred Rewane Road → Osborne Road → Ring Road.
- To Inner Marina and CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way
- Follow Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → J.K. Randle Road.
- To Ahmadu Bello Way from Inner Marina or CMS
- Motorists should use available traffic access points.
Traffic Management and Public Advisory
Oshiyemi assured residents that officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground to regulate movement and minimize disruptions throughout the repair period.
He urged all road users to remain patient and adhere to traffic regulations, emphasizing that the repairs are part of a federal road rehabilitation project aimed at improving infrastructure in Lagos.
