The ongoing communal clashes between the Ifon and Ilobu communities took a more violent turn on Saturday, extending to the neighboring town of Erin Osun.
The conflict, which has led to the displacement of several residents, prompted swift action from the Osun State government.
In an effort to curb the escalating violence, Governor Ademola Adeleke has enforced a 24-hour curfew across the affected areas. This decision comes after an initial 12-hour curfew was imposed earlier in response to the crisis. Reports indicate that many displaced individuals, including women and children, were seen seeking refuge in nearby communities such as Okinni, while some non-indigenous residents, particularly from the northern part of the country, were spotted leaving the troubled zone in buses.
Government’s Response and Security Measures
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke outlined the measures being taken to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed. According to the statement, the state government has not only imposed a 24-hour curfew but has also mobilized a joint security task force to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents.
As part of the peace-building efforts, the governor has initiated dialogue and mediation between the warring communities. He reassured residents of his commitment to protecting lives and property, stating:
“I am committed to ensuring the safety of the people of Ilobu and Ifon. I have also updated the presidency on the situation, and we are actively managing the crisis.”
Condemnation of Misinformation and Fake News
Governor Adeleke’s statement also addressed the issue of misinformation, warning against the spread of old videos that are being falsely presented as recent events in Osun State. He accused opposition elements of attempting to incite panic by circulating outdated footage from past communal clashes.
“While the ongoing conflict is regrettable, and every effort is being made to restore peace, we urge the public to be wary of fake news merchants who are digging up old videos to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension,” the statement read.
He further emphasized that videos claiming to depict violence in other towns and villages across Osun are misleading and should be disregarded.
Call for Calm and Cooperation
The state government has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to de-escalate the conflict continue. Authorities have also warned against violating the curfew, emphasizing that strict measures will be taken against those who attempt to disrupt peace efforts.
Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to peaceful co-existence among communities in Osun State, calling on traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to join in resolving the crisis through dialogue rather than violence.
With the situation still tense, security forces remain on high alert to prevent further unrest and protect innocent civilians caught in the conflict.
