Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has addressed concerns regarding the potential implementation of a Sharia Panel in certain South-West states, including Oyo.
Speaking at the 2025 Iftar Programme organized by the Oyo State Government at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Makinde clarified that his administration remains committed to upholding the Constitution and will not oppose any initiative that aligns with its provisions.
His remarks come in response to a media report suggesting that the state government intended to challenge the establishment of the Sharia Panel in court. However, Makinde dismissed such claims, stating that individuals are free to approach the panel if they choose, as it serves as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
Commitment to Constitutional Governance
Makinde emphasized that while the panel can assist in resolving disputes, the Constitution remains the ultimate legal framework governing all matters in the state. He reassured the public that his government supports peaceful coexistence and will not tolerate any attempts to create religious discord.
“I read in the newspaper that I would go to court for an interpretation on the Sharia Panel in Oyo, but that is not my position,” Makinde stated. “We will support anything that is in our Constitution. I have always maintained that we should not encourage division among ourselves, no matter how small.”
He further explained that in families and communities, not every dispute is taken to court, as elders often mediate conflicts. In this context, the Sharia Panel can serve as an alternative dispute resolution forum, reducing the burden on the judiciary while allowing those who voluntarily seek its services to do so.
Addressing Political Speculation
Makinde also warned against individuals who may exploit religious sentiments for political gain ahead of the next election. He reaffirmed his administration’s focus on long-term development rather than short-term political maneuvering.
“As we approach the next election, there will be those who only think about their own interests, but our government is thinking about the next generation,” he said.
Citing infrastructure projects as an example, he explained that his administration opted for full-scale road reconstruction rather than temporary fixes. “Many of our roads were built 50 to 60 years ago. Instead of patching them up repeatedly, we decided to reconstruct them so they can last another 30 years.”
Appreciation to the Islamic Community and State Institutions
Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to the Islamic community for their support and prayers, acknowledging their contributions to the state’s progress. He also commended the legislative and judicial arms of government, as well as security agencies, for their roles in maintaining peace and stability.
Urging residents to remain vigilant against divisive tactics, he reassured them that Oyo State would not return to an era of political unrest. “With your prayers and cooperation, our state will continue on the path of sustainable development,” he concluded.
