Governor Charles Soludo has once again demonstrated his political acumen by carefully orchestrating events to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) fields a weak candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial election. His apparent choice is Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, a Pentecostal Christian.
Similarly, Soludo is reportedly employing the same strategy to influence the Labour Party’s primaries, favoring the emergence of George Moghalu as its gubernatorial candidate. Moghalu, a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), along with his wife, holds the position of an ordained deacon in the church.
The underlying political calculation is clear: If APC and Labour Party both field Pentecostal candidates, the dominant Catholic and Anglican voter base in Anambra may choose to support Soludo’s re-election rather than backing a Pentecostal candidate. However, if the Labour Party selects a Catholic nominee, this carefully laid-out plan could face serious disruption .
Religious and sectional politics continue to play a significant role in Anambra’s political landscape. There are widespread speculations that Soludo has been working behind the scenes to ensure that two Pentecostal candidates emerge from APC and Labour Party, respectively. Allegedly, financial contributions made by George Moghalu to Labour Party’s National Working Committee were backed by Soludo himself.
Ultimately, the fate of APC and Labour Party now rests on their choice of candidate. If APC fields Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, they risk losing to Soludo. Likewise, if Labour Party selects George Moghalu, they may also struggle to defeat the incumbent governor. The decision now lies in the hands of the party leadership and delegates . The winning option for APC should be Obiora Okonkwo and Labour Party is John Nwosu .
