Tanker Carrying 45,000 Litres of Petrol Overturns in Oyo

A petroleum tanker transporting approximately 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, overturned in Oyo State, causing concerns over potential hazards.

The accident occurred along the Offa-Metta section of the Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway at around 9 a.m. on Saturday. Eyewitnesses reported that the IVECO trailer tanker, bearing registration number Jigawa GMN 413 XA, veered off the road and overturned, leading to a potentially dangerous situation.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, stated that emergency responders were swiftly dispatched to the scene after receiving an alert.

In an official statement released on Saturday evening, Akinyinka detailed the response efforts: “At exactly 9:38 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025, a distress call was received via mobile phone regarding a trailer tanker accident at the aforementioned location.

“A team of firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Tijani Bamidele, was immediately deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, the responders discovered that an IVECO trailer tanker with registration number Jigawa – GMN 413 XA, loaded with 45,000 litres of AGO, had lost control, causing the tanker to detach from the truck’s head.

“To prevent a possible fire outbreak, we quickly implemented necessary safety measures, including the application of a foam chemical compound to neutralize any potential ignition sources. Our team remained on standby for an extended period to ensure the area was secure.”

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, while motorists have been advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected section of the highway.

No casualties have been reported as of the time of filing this report, but safety officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
