Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has dismissed allegations that he was behind recent protests against the leadership of the Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Speaking before traditional rulers and community members, Umahi described the accusations as baseless and misleading, clarifying that he never authorized any demonstrations against the hospital’s management.
“I didn’t direct any protest. The President General asked me in Abakaliki, ‘Shall we do a protest?’ and I said no, don’t,” he stated emphatically.
Call for Unity and Support for DUFUTH’s Leadership
Umahi urged the community to rally behind the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Uzoma Agwu, and allow her to complete her tenure without unnecessary distractions. He underscored the hospital’s critical role in serving the people of Ebonyi and beyond, emphasizing that its success should not be hindered by individual interests.
“Let’s hand over the hospital to her; she is our daughter. I’m sure you all heard me very well. If we have our children working in the hospital writing petitions, it is against the institution itself,” he warned.
The Minister further advised against filing petitions against individuals within the hospital, cautioning that such actions only serve to weaken the institution and give room for external forces seeking to undermine its development.
“Do not write petitions against anyone; doing so only plays into the hands of our enemies—those who do not want the hospital to thrive. This hospital is bigger than individuals. It serves thousands of people, and its success is crucial. Instead of causing distractions, let’s support it with prayers for its continued growth,” Umahi added.
Governor Nwifuru Steps in to Mediate
Acknowledging the concerns raised by various stakeholders, Umahi revealed that Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has intervened to mediate and resolve the crisis surrounding DUFUTH.
“The governor has graciously agreed to intervene. Let’s allow him to investigate and address the issues at hand,” he noted, calling for patience and cooperation among all parties involved.
As tensions ease, Umahi reiterated his commitment to ensuring the stability and growth of DUFUTH, urging the community to prioritize the hospital’s development over personal grievances.
