The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has endorsed Governor Bassey Otu and his deputy, Peter Odey, as the party’s candidates for the 2027 general election.
This decision, which effectively grants them an automatic ticket, was announced by the APC State Chairman, Alphonsus Eba, on Monday.
During a media briefing, Eba emphasized that while the governor and his deputy had been given the party’s full backing, other aspirants interested in contesting political positions should commence their consultations and seek grassroots support. He clarified that no other individual had been granted an automatic ticket, reinforcing the party’s commitment to a democratic selection process for other offices.
“The State Working Committee and the State Executive Committee of APC convened today and unanimously agreed that Governor Otu will be the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 elections,” Eba stated. “A winning team should not be disrupted. The governor and his deputy have proven their leadership, and they will once again be our flag bearers.”
Eba further noted that even if Governor Otu expressed reluctance to seek re-election, the party would still proceed with his nomination, similar to what transpired in 2022. “We urge him to heed the calls of party members and accept the nomination for the good of the state,” he added.
In addition to reaffirming support for the state leadership, Eba commended Deputy Governor Peter Odey, who is currently serving as acting governor, for aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s policies concerning Rivers State. He pointed out that certain individuals had misrepresented Cross River’s stance on national matters and praised the acting governor for setting the record straight.
“The acting governor has done well in ensuring clarity on the position of Cross River. Some had misinterpreted our stance, but he has reaffirmed that the South-South governors did not consult him before opposing President Tinubu’s intervention in Rivers,” Eba said.
He concluded by applauding President Tinubu’s role in maintaining political stability in Rivers State, highlighting his efforts in preventing what could have escalated into a major crisis. According to Eba, the President’s decisive actions have helped restore order and avert unnecessary political turmoil in the region.
The APC’s decision to back Governor Otu and his deputy reflects confidence in their administration and sets the stage for the party’s strategy in the upcoming elections.
As preparations for 2027 gain momentum, the political landscape in Cross River State is expected to witness intensified engagements among party members and aspirants vying for other elective offices.
